Wood

Ralph Williams is a self-taught artist working exclusively with wood. He specializes in bird sculptures. Having worked in industry and the Department of Ornithology at the Natural History Museum, Ralph subsequently became self-employed in forestry and woodcarving.

His carving reflects a life-long interest in the natural world and an appreciation of his chosen medium. His unusual and surprising use of grain, colouration and other naturally occurring features unique to each piece of wood achieves a highly crafted and individual end result.

Ralph collects and seasons most of the timber himself, keeping large stocks of favourites including walnut, yew, plane and laburnum.
