Stick Fishing at Sunset”, an image by award-winning photographer Aaron Northcott, has an interesting story behind it.

“Having already arrived later than I’d planned to the beach in Koggala via TukTuk, Sri Lanka, I was relieved to see that there were still fishermen perched on their platforms,” says Aaron. “The Sun was falling below the horizon and time was short, so I waded out fully clothed into the waves up to my chest – careful to protect my lens from the salty water (unfortunately forgetting about the phone in my pocket!).The fishermen are very used to photographers taking their picture and were happy to hold position for me as I continued to capture my images well after the Sun had set. The final image needed very little post-processing; the colours were spectacular straight from the camera.”

Stick Fishing at Sunset” was recently awarded third prize in the Alverton Penzance “We Love the Coast 2017” Photographic Competition.

“It’s always very difficult for the judges to decide on third place,” comments Roger Driscoll, Director of the Alverton Gallery and joint host of the contest. “It can be tough on the fourth and fifth entries because they just miss out. When we first saw Stick Fishing at Sunset we were unaware of the story behind it, in fact we only found out once our decisions had been announced. Stick Fishing at Sunset impressed the judges for its composition, dramatic sky and stunning use of silhouette. We’re now in no doubt that we came to the right conclusion.”

The image is but one example of Aaron’s impressive portfolio. Aaron captures powerful, inspiring imagery and his passion for photography, his subjects and the world around us is always evident through the work he produces – pushing himself constantly to be one of the most versatile, creative and innovative visual artists working in the photography industry today.

“The work I produce has been seen around the world,” he says. “And although I specialise in Wildlife and Landscapes, my portfolio is diverse and also includes Travel, Outdoor Living, Adventure, Portraits, Architecture and much, much more. I am delighted to have had my image selected as one of the top 3 in the Alverton Penzance Photographic Competition, it has marked a great start to 2017!”

A passion for wildlife combined with creative flair from a young age has allowed Aaron to build a career that brings him closer to the Natural World and allows him to share his vision and the beauty he sees in the world around us with his audiences.

A framed and mounted print of Stick Fishing at Sunset will be exhibited at the Alverton Gallery, Penzance, Cornwall UK during March 2017 along with the remaining top ten winning competition entries.
