Article in The Cornishman 25 February 2016 announcing our Ali Cockrean exhibition “Chasing Waves” 1 March to 15 April 2016:
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Artist Chasing Waves at the Alverton Gallery
Commissioned by the BBC in 2012 to paint the royal River Pageant, live from the Millennium Bridge, during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Ali Cockrean’s painting from that historic day is now on show in Penzance at The Alverton Gallery. This will be the painting’s first appearance in Cornwall. It was last exhibited alongside David Hockney’s work in London. Her paintings are collected by art lovers worldwide, appearing in prestigious exhibitions at The Mall Galleries and Cork Street among many others.
“During March and April, the Jubilee painting will form the centrepiece of a new exhibition, ‘Chasing Waves’, featuring Ali’s work as an expressionist land and seascape painter,” said Roger Driscoll, Gallery Director at the Alverton. “Her images are so atmospheric and compelling. We are absolutely delighted to be adding Ali’s work to the body of highly talented artists we represent.”
Living locally, Cornwall provides the inspiration for Ali’s work, which is all about capturing intense mood and atmosphere. “I prefer to work entirely from memory, choosing not to jog my recollections of places by sketching, looking at photographs or taking notes,” she said. “Spontaneity is crucial – it creates the energy and captures the spirit of the place. I hugely enjoy the roller coaster of ups and downs as a painting ebbs and flows to completion, hence the title of the show, ‘Chasing Waves’.
The Exhibition runs 1st March to 15th April 2016, Tuesday to Saturday 9.30 am to 5 pm at The Alverton Gallery Penzance. See www.thealvertongallery.co.uk
